Top Questions to Ask Your Contractor

Have you considered hiring a contractor to complete one of the home renovation projects on your list. If you’ve never hired a contractor to do work at your house, the process might seem overwhelming at first. You probably have multiple questions and concerns running through your mind and aren’t sure where to begin.

It’s important to know the right questions to ask in your initial meeting with a contractor. You want to feel comfortable, but also confident in who you hire to complete your home renovation project. Here are some questions to consider asking a potential contractor.

Is your contracting license up to date?

Most people don’t think to confirm that a contractors license is up to date, but this is extremely important to do so. Depending on where you live each city, state, and even township have different requirements on what license and credentials contractors must have. Research your specific area and don’t be afraid to ask your contractor to make copies of the needed licenses and certificates.

Do we need to obtain the required permits and set up the required inspections for the job?

If you have never hired a contractor before this phase can be confusing and stressful. At Penn Construction & Design we understand that compiling the needed permits and getting proper inspections for a job is time consuming. That’s why we do this for you! We will get all of the required permits and inspections needed to start your home renovation process.

How will you clean up?

A quality contractor will not only clean up at the end of each day, but will also do a thorough cleaning when the job is completed. As a homeowner you want to make sure you cover this with your contractor and the crew while establishing your expectations from the start. Let them know if there is anything in particular you want done at the end of each day.

Will there be a dedicated team working on my job?

Establishing a good relationship with your contractor and the crew that will be working in your home is important. When it comes to who will be on the job consistency is key. It’s normal for contracting companies to be working multiple projects at once, so make sure to verify that there will be a dedicated team on your project. Don’t be afraid to find out who the project manager will be, if there will be subcontractors on the job, and how often the owner will be checking in.

Hopefully these key questions will help you as you start to connect with contractors for your home renovation project. Find out the cleaning process, if their licenses are up to date, and if there will be a dedicated crew working on your project.
