How to Stay on Track During a Home Renovation Project

When taking on a home renovation project the first question many will ask is, how long will this take? The answer will depend on the home renovation project. Do you plan to make minor improvements, or are looking to completely gut your current space and start from scratch? These are important questions to ask yourself when considering how long a project might take.

Keep in mind you don’t have to be an expert to stay on track during your home renovation project. The key is to make sure you and the contractor you hire are on the same page. Communication is critical when it comes to staying on track & within your ideal timeframe during any home renovation project.

Here are some things to remember to help you stay on track during your next home renovation project.

Plan, Plan, and Plan.  This is the best way to keep track of your project and understand the process that goes into it. Asking questions like, how long do similar projects take? What materials will I need, and will I be updating any of the appliances? All of these are great questions to ask yourself as you start to build out your home renovation plan.

Be hands on. Don’t be afraid to be hands on throughout the renovation process. Know what materials/appliances you want and communicate this with your contractor. Don’t be afraid to speak up if something doesn’t look the way you discussed. Like we previously stated communication is key when it comes to staying on track! It is also important when making sure the project is done the way you want it the first time around.

Communicate.  This is one thing we cannot stress enough! Do your own research, and compile a list of questions you might have for your contractor. The more you communicate the more you will stay informed.

Stick to a plan. Once you have your design plan, materials/appliances selected, a detailed budget, it is important to stick with this plan. Before you sign any agreements consider scheduling one final meeting with your contractor to go over everything and make sure you are both on the same page.

Hopefully these tips will come in handy as you start to navigate through your home renovation project. Just remember to always communicate, properly plan and stay hands on to help make sure everything runs smoothly and on track.
